PORT ANGELES — The state Department of Ecology misread state law two weeks ago when it prohibited soil shipments from the state Department of Transportation’s graving yard site to the Fields Shotwell quarry, a state lawmaker said Tuesday.
Rep. Jim Buck, R-Joyce, made that charge in a six-page memo sent to the state departments of Ecology and Transportation as well as Gov. Gary Locke.
Before the Aug. 26 discovery of Native American remains caused work to be halted at the graving yard site, excavated soil was being taken to the Fields Shotwell quarry off U.S. Highway 101 west of Port Angeles.
