PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles author Kate McDermott will be the featured guest during a special segment today on “In the Kitchen with David,” a cooking show on QVC hosted by David Venable.
QVC is a cable, satellite and broadcast television network specializing in televised home shopping.
“I have been asked to be on QVC as a guest and we will be presenting the book, Art of the Pie,” McDermott said Friday from New York City.
“It is a pretty major thing.”
The show will be broadcast live from the broadcast studio in West Chester, Pa., from 9 a.m. to noon Pacific Standard Time, according to qvc.com.
For WAVE cable customers, QVC is on Channel 8 in Jefferson County and Channel 19 in Clallam County. For DirecTV customers, QVC is on Channel 70.
The book, Art of the Pie: A Practical Guide to Homemade Crusts, Fillings, and Life, is scheduled for release Oct. 4, according to portbooknews.com. Its publisher is The Countryman Press/W.W. Norton.
McDermott said on her website at artofthepie.com she has been interested in cooking since she was a girl.
“In the afternoons after school, I would come home and while my mom taught piano lessons, I would get out the mixing bowl and spoons to make cookies, cakes and bread,” she said.
“I took great delight in arranging a pretty table with china, cloth napkins, cutlery and flowers from mom’s garden,” she said.
“Some of these first attempts were disasters but many turned out to be pretty good and kept me interested in baking.”
In the late 1990s, McDermott and her son, Duncan, lived on a Joyce area blueberry farm, she said.
“There was no shortage of berries there,” she said.
“I made blueberry pie, blackberry pie [and] raspberry pie — combining them all to make triple-berry pie.
“I brought pie to the local grange events for fundraiser bake sales.
“I used to take a quick peek later in the day to see if there was any left. It always brought a smile to my face to see that every piece had disappeared.”
