The Daishowa America paper mill in Port Angeles is undergoing $3.4 million in capital improvements during an annual shutdown, which is expected to last in phases until June 10, mill manager Harold Norlund said Monday.
During the shutdown, Norlund said, the mill’s 251 employees will be either on vacation or given special maintenance or cleanup assignments.
“All along we have talked about making improvements to the plant to decrease our costs,” Norlund said.
The mill’s boiler has been down a week and will start up again June 10, he said. The plant’s paper machines were taken down Monday night and will be idle until June 8.
The mill is Clallam County’s largest private employer.
