Port Angeles building facade program expands

PORT ANGELES — The city has expanded its facade improvement program.

The City Council on Tuesday voted to expand the program to commercial businesses located on any arterial roadway.

The program, established last year to improve the look of highly visible buildings, originally was for businesses in city’s main commercial areas.

The program allocates up to $10,000 for exterior improvements and up to $1,000 for sign improvements.

Up to three facade grants and three sign grants will be awarded this year.

To date, $25,179 in matching funds has been allocated to four projects.

They include:

• $10,000 for turning the vacant Kauffman-Miller building, 123 E. First St., into three separate storefronts.

• $4,179 for renovating the exterior of the top floor of Serenity House of Clallam County’s building at 535 E. First St.

• $10,000 for replacing an awning at Bailey Signs & Graphics, 112 S. Lincoln St., rebuilding a wall and replacing windows.

• $1,000 for replacing Pacific Refrigeration’s sign. The building is located at 600 E. First St.

The grants were awarded last December.

Work has begun on three of the projects.

The program is funded by the city’s Economic Development Fund.

The program has $90,813 remaining.
