Planning Commission chairman applies for Port Townsend City Council vacancy

PORT TOWNSEND – A 64-year-old retiree who has served on the Port Townsend Planning Commission since 2003 is the first to apply for the City Council seat vacated by Scott Walker.

George Randels submitted his application to City Hall shortly before the council last week approved a schedule for advertising the opening.

After serving 14 months, Walker resigned effective March 15, citing personal reasons.

No one else had applied as of Friday.

Candidates for the seat can apply to the city clerk’s office at City Hall, 250 Madison St.

Required from each candidate is a résumé, a letter of interest addressed to Mayor Mark Welch at City Hall, 250 Madison St., and written answers to four questions.

The questions ask candidates for their qualifications and involvement in civic organizations, as well as why they want to serve and what they feel are the three most important issues facing the city.
