Peninsula Briefly: Clallam OKs 2nd farmers market in PA

PORT ANGELES — Clallam County commissioners unanimously approved a lease agreement with the Port Angeles Farmers Market on Tuesday.

Under the agreement, farmers market vendors will be able use a courthouse parking lot to sell their products.

The first Port Angeles Farmers Market will take place at 9 a.m. on Saturday, July 7 in the courthouse parking lot at 223 E. Fourth St.

The market will continue every Saturday at least until winter.

The farmers market will be the second in operation in Port Angeles.

The other farmers market is operated by Gertrud Rohrback at the intersection of Eighth and Chase streets.

Traffic enforcement

In an effort to keep traffic fatalities to a minimum during the Fourth of July holiday, the Washington State Patrol is stepping up enforcement activities.

Beginning Friday, troopers and other law enforcement agencies in the state, Oregon and British Columbia will participate in Three Flags Enforcement Blitz.

Troopers will be targeting speeders, alcohol-impaired drivers and motorists not using seatbelts. Commercial vehicle safety inspections will also be increased.

Last year, Blitz resulted in 445 drunken driving arrests, 14,168 speeding tickets, 1,569 seatbelt citations and 262 felony and misdemeanor arrests.

The stepped up enforcement lasts through July 8.

Ponds get cleaning

JOYCE — The North Olympic Salmon Coalition will clear reed canary grass around trees and ponds along Salt Creek this Saturday.

Volunteers will meet at 10 a.m. at the Laird’s Corner park and ride to carpool to the site.

The ponds provide rearing and over-winter habitat for juvenile coho salmon and the extensive tree planting needs summer maintenance to assure future shade for the ponds.

Volunteers will need gloves, lunch and hedge trimmers, if possible. For more information, call Neil Harrington at 360-379-8051.

Patrol cuts presence

PORT ANGELES — Effective July 1, the Washington State Patrol’s Port Angeles detachment will cut back Friday office hours.

The detachment office hours will be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays.

The business office will be closed Fridays to conserve energy, a State Patrol spokesman said.

Troopers will continue to operate out of the Port Angeles office daily and an emergency phone is located at the front entrance of the office building.

The Friday closure will be in effect through Aug. 31, when an energy savings evaluation will be conducted.

Native plant field trip

QUILCENE — The North Olympic Peninsula chapter of the Washington Native Place Society will be hiking to Mount Townsend on Sunday.

The group will depart at 8:30 a.m. from the Quilcene Post Office.

During the 7-mile hike, the trail rises steadily from old-growth forest to subalpine meadows.

The hike will last all day, so hikers should bring water, lunch and appropriate clothing, organizers said.

Anyone interested in participating should contact Chuck Easton or Autumn Scott at 360-732-4984.

There is no cost to participate in the hike.
