One hurt when driver falls asleep, hits tree

PORT TOWNSEND — A driver fell asleep behind the wheel of a car and crashed into a tree on state Highway 20 near Frederick Street at 7:34 a.m. Saturday, the State Patrol said.

Natalee R. Raines, 21, of Salem, Ore., was traveling eastbound on Highway 20 when her vehicle left the roadway to the right at milepost 9 and hit a tree, troopers said.

Raines was not injured but her passenger, Tiffiny D. Plumley, 28, of Port Townsend was taken to the Jefferson Healthcare in Port Townsend. Her condition was not available on Sunday.

Raines was cited with second degree negligent driving, the State Patrol said.

Both were wearing seatbelts and neither drugs nor alcohol were involved, troopers said.

The vehicle was completely destroyed, according to the State Patrol.
