SEATTLE – A retired Port Townsend structural engineer thinks the best – and cheapest – avenue for the aging Alaskan Way viaduct along Seattle’s waterfront is to fix it rather than replace it.
Victor Gray, an acclaimed structural engineer who worked on hundreds of Seattle projects before retiring to Port Townsend, has so far been spurned by the state on his retrofitting proposal for the elevated road that carries state Highway 99.
A March 13 election will allow Seattle city voters to weigh in on two options: rebuilding the viaduct or building a tunnel to house the traffic.
“I think the voters will not pass either option,” said Gray, 80.
“Then the state might give some serious consideration to the retrofitting option.”
