OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK — Thirty-two area nonprofits will send representatives to the inaugural Alliance for Leadership Programs conference Friday.
Each participant at the all-day conference on the campus of NatureBridge Olympic (formerly Olympic Park Institute) on Lake Crescent in Olympic National Park will receive a copy of the book Nonprofit Sustainability: Making Strategic Decisions for Nonprofit Viability.
The book by Jeanne Bell, Jan Masaoka and Steve Zimmerman will provide the framework for conference discussions and also will be made available in the Forks, Port Angeles and Sequim libraries, according to a statement from the organizers.
The lead presenter will be Shannon Ellis, a staff member of San Francisco-based CompassPoint, which assists nonprofit executives and board members in analyzing and adjusting their business models for greater organizational sustainability.
All expenses beyond a $50-per-agency registration fee will be covered by sponsoring funders.
Claire Bishop, representative of the Seattle Foundation for the conference’s largest funder, the Benjamin N. Phillips Memorial Fund, said she and other conference planners, representing several nonprofits in Clallam County, are pleased with the number of organizations that sent in applications and required documentation of nonprofit status.
‘A good start’
“This is a good start for a program with great potential for assisting participants in our first conference and others we hope will follow in future years,” she said.
Bishop said this year’s conference theme, sustainability, emerged from a broad survey of nonprofit organizations in Clallam County about their priorities.
Other contributors are United Way of Clallam County, the Sequim Community Foundation and the Medina Foundation.
Bishop said all the funders will be represented at the conference, providing opportunities for local groups to learn more about related funding opportunities and other services.
Participating agencies were chosen from applications submitted to a committee, with representation from funding sponsors and other nonprofit organizations.
Invited to send one staff member and one board member to the conference are Adoption Advocates International, American Red Cross-Olympic Peninsula Chapter, Boys & Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula, Camp Fire USA, Clallam-Jefferson Pro Bono Lawyers, Dungeness River Audubon Center, Feiro Marine Life Center and First Step Family Support Center.
Also, Habitat for Humanity of Clallam County, Homeward Bound, Mosaic, Museum & Arts Center in Sequim, NatureBridge, North Olympic Land Trust, North Olympic Peninsula Resource Conservation & Development Council, Olympic Peninsula Rowing Association and Parenting Matters Foundation.
