NEWS BRIEFS: Port Angeles man with Alzheimer’s lost in Wyoming … and other items

WAMSUTTER, Wyo. — A search is on in southern Wyoming for a Port Angeles man suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.

Sweetwater County Sheriff Mike Lowell said 82-year-old Robert Winters and his wife were driving home to Port Angeles when they stopped in the remote, high-desert town of Wamsutter along Interstate 80.

Lowell said Tuesday the man drove off by himself and has not been heard from since. Winters was driving a gray 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche.

Sheriff’s officials say Winters suffers from short-term memory loss.

He is described as a white male about 6 feet tall and weighing 175 pounds. He was last seen wearing a blue T-shirt and blue jeans.

Bridge closed for an hour today

PORT ANGELES — The Elwha River Bridge on U.S. Highway 101 west of Port Angeles will be closed to all traffic for an hour this morning.

The bridge will be closed between about 8:45 a.m. and 9:45 a.m. today, the state Department of Transportation announced Tuesday afternoon.

During that time, crews working for Transportation will lower equipment into the Elwha River for drilling activities associated with design work on a new Elwha River Bridge.

Motorists are advised to use state highway 112 and 113 as a detour. Drivers are also advised that the hour time frame is approximate and depends on work progress.

Crews had hoped to accomplish the work Tuesday under a single-lane closure, but the water flow in the river was too high for the work to be safely accomplished, Transportation said.

Today’s approach will require crews to lower a small work platform into the river and to drill from that platform.

Hood Canal Bridge delay

SHINE — A five-hour closure of the Hood Canal Bridge overnight may have delayed delivery of the Peninsula Daily News.

The closure was from 11 p.m. Tuesday to 4 a.m. today.

Crews opened the bridge to traffic several times during the time period to ease congestion. The traffic openings were unscheduled and performed as workloads allow.

Depending on work progress, additional night closures may be scheduled.

The closure could mean that delivery of the Peninsula Daily News and the Sequim Gazette was delayed. The newspapers are printed in Everett and brought back over the bridge in the early morning hours.

The closures allow crews to continue a project to replace mechanical components of the bridge.

Air war exercise

SPOKANE — A big military air war exercise began Monday across the Pacific Northwest.

More than 3,700 military personnel from 30 countries are involved.

The Spokesman-Review said the two-week war game will take place across the entire state. Airmen and soldiers will be airdropping paratroopers and supplies, setting up remote airfields, accomplishing medical evacuation missions and conducting aerial refueling.

Fairchild Air Force Base in Spokane and Joint Base Lewis-McChord near Tacoma will play central roles in the Mobility Guardian exercise, along with McAllister Field, the Yakima Training Center and the Moses Lake area.

The exercise will use the Air Force’s many types of aircraft: tankers, fighters, cargo and bombers.

In all, about 90 aircraft will be used in the exercise.

PORT ANGELES — A donation and four scholarships were received at Olympic Medical Center Auxiliary’s annual “Wish-list” ceremony June 12.

The funds will be used for a new security system in the hospital obstetrics unit, according to a news release.

Medical students Nicole Anders, Georgia Anderson, Kyle Flotto-Meyers and Jason Kowitz each received $1,500 scholarships from the auxiliary.

The auxiliary raises funds for the medical center through fundraisers and its gift shop in the center’s lobby, 939 Caroline St.
