NEWS BRIEFS — Gleaners still available in Clallam County . . . and other local items

Anyone who has a tree or garden turning out more produce than he or she can handle can contact the WSU Clallam County Gleaners to pick the unwanted harvest and share it with those who can use it.

Author to present

PORT TOWNSEND — Author David Barash will present a program discussing his latest book, Buddhist Biology: Ancient Eastern Wisdom Meets Modern Western Science, at the Library Learning Center, 1256 Lawrence St., next to the Carnegie Library.

The lecture is at 6:30 p.m. Monday.

Books are available for sale at $25 and for signing.

The event is free for all attendees.

Barash is a professor of psychology at the University of Washington.

A longtime evolutionary biologist as well as an aspiring Buddhist, he has been involved in the development of sociobiology, as well as the field of peace studies, and is the author or co-author of 33 books.

Barash will discuss his book, which highlights the common ground between scientific and religious thought and stresses the many parallels between biology and Buddhism.

Garden club meets

SEQUIM — The Sequim Prairie Garden Club will meet at the clubhouse in Pioneer Memorial Park, 387 E. Washington St., at 10:30 a.m. Monday.

The meeting will begin with a presentation by Francoise Pearlman, “Greenhouse 101,” focusing on how to select, organize and use a greenhouse.

The public is welcome to attend.

A brown-bag lunch will follow the speaker, with coffee and desserts provided by hostesses Arlene Sawyer, Ginny Burkhardt, Eleanor Garthwaite and Barbara Fitzgerald.

A business meeting will follow.

Flight operations

COUPEVILLE — There will be field carrier landing practice operations for aircraft stationed at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island at the outlying field in Coupeville on Monday, Tuesday and Friday.

Early evening training going into the late night is scheduled Monday and Tuesday.

Training Friday is in the late morning and will continue into the early afternoon

Mushroom group

SEQUIM — The Olympic Peninsula Mycological Society will meet at 980 Old Gardiner Road from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Anyone interested in fungi is welcome.

The featured presenter is mushroom photographer Taylor Lockwood.

His work from around the world has been featured in National Geographic and other publications.

The society is also planning for the Fall Mushroom Show on Oct. 18 at the Elks Lodge in Sequim.

Senior meals available this week in PA

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles Senior Nutrition Site dinners will be served at 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday at the Port Angeles Senior Center, 328 E. Seventh St.

A suggested donation is $5 for those who are 60 or older.

People younger than 60 can attend for $8.

Reservations should be made 24 hours in advance to 360-457-8921.

Menus are subject to change.

■ Tuesday: Sliced tomatoes, fresh cantaloupe, barbecue chicken, potato salad, biscuit and apple crisp.

■ Wednesday: Beet salad, corned beef sandwich, roasted red potatoes and pears.

■ Thursday: Cottage cheese with fruit, grilled chicken sandwich, potato wedges and apple cake.

■ Friday: Salad, meatloaf, mashed potatoes and gravy, veggies and dessert.

Paddlers to meet

PORT ANGELES — The Olympic Peninsula Paddlers will meet at the Vern Burton Community Center, 308 E. Fourth St., at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

The club presentation, “Paddling the Broken Islands,” is on a recent trip to Barkley Sound on Vancouver Island.

Art for kids

PORT ANGELES ­­— New “ARTworks” classes for children age 6 to 12 are coming soon to the Vern Burton Community Center, 308 E. Fourth St., courtesy of the Port Angeles Fine Arts Center.

These are basic classes in clay sculpture with Karen White, an artist and teacher from Kirkland.

The fees are $12 per session for arts center members and $15 for nonmembers, or kids can take the whole series for $31 (members) or $40 (nonmembers).

Chef to sign book at PT sweet shop

PORT TOWNSEND — New York pastry chef Fran Costigan will sign her new book, Vegan Chocolate: Unapologetically Luscious and Decadent Dairy-Free Desserts, at Elevated Ice Cream’s candy store, 631 Water St., from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Vegan Chocolate features 120 chocolate dessert recipes, including flavored chocolate truffles, Brooklyn Blackout Layer Cake, eclairs, moon pies made with homemade vegan graham crackers and more.

All recipes are plant-based; some are gluten-free and some are raw; all are made with easily sourced ingredients, without dairy, eggs or white sugar.

An instructor at New York’s Institute of Culinary Education and the Natural Gourmet Institute, Costigan is a recipe developer and the author of three cookbooks.

Frankenstein read

SEQUIM — Frankenstein by Mary Shelley will be discussed at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave., at 3 p.m. Saturday.

A Gothic thriller, a passionate romance and a cautionary tale about the dangers of science, Frankenstein tells the story of committed science student Victor Frankenstein.

Obsessed with discovering the cause of generation and life and bestowing animation upon lifeless matter, Frankenstein assembles a human being from stolen body parts.

But once brought to life, he recoils in horror at the creature’s hideousness.

Tormented by isolation and loneliness, the once-innocent creature turns to evil and unleashes a campaign of murderous revenge against his creator, Frankenstein.

Copies of the book are available at the Sequim Library in various formats, including regular print, large print, audio book on CD, Playaway and downloadable audio and e-book.
