More beaches open for shellfish harvesting

Recreational shellfish harvesting is open on Strait of Juan de Fuca beaches from Lyre River east to Discovery Bay, which is closed for all species of shellfish.

Sequim Bay and Dungeness Bay are open for shellfish harvesting except for butter and varnish clams, which hold onto toxins for up to a year.

In Jefferson County, Quilcene Bay beaches are now open for the harvesting of all species of shellfish.

Others, except those on Discovery Bay, are open for most shellfish harvesting except for butter clams and varnish clams. Those include Port Ludlow and Mats Mats Bay and Port Townsend and Admiralty Inlet, as well as Kilisut Harbor including Mystery Bay and Fort Flagler State Park.

Ocean beaches are closed to all species — meaning all clams (including geoduck), oysters, mussels and other invertebrates such as the moon snail.

Shellfish harvested commercially are tested for toxin prior to distribution and should be safe to eat.

The DOH Shellfish Safety Map shows up-to-date information for recreational shellfish harvesting at www.doh.wa.gov/ShellfishSafety.htm. Information also is available at the Shellfish Safety Hotline at 800-562-5632.

Recreational harvesters can check Fish and Wildlife regulations and seasons at wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/shellfish or the shellfish rule change hotline at 1-866-880-5431.
