Foundation donation pushes United Way over $1 million goal

PORT ANGELES -United Way of Clallam County exceeded its fundraising goal of $1 million thanks to a donation from the Albert Haller Foundation.

The $143,000 gift was to be announced at the United Way’s 2006 Campaign Awards Presentation on Thursday.

“It is such a benefit to the community,” said Jody Moss, executive director of the United Way.

“The Haller Foundation did some careful saving and with the returns they were able to make this donation,” she said.

“It will really make a difference serving youth or helping those living in poverty.”

In addition to the Albert Haller Foundation, other contributing individuals, businesses and foundations throughout the county were to be presented awards for their donations to the campaign.

The Haller foundation’s investment earnings totaled more than $100,000 at the end of 2006.

The $143,000 had to be handed out as quickly as possible, Moss said, and so the foundation distributed the money through the United Way.

The last-minute gift meant that the United Way was able to meet and exceed the year’s goal of $1 million.

United Way had more than $900,000 in contributions from businesses and individuals, but hadn’t yet met the goal of $1 million.

Funds for the campaign were raised through businesses, individuals, donations from other foundations and some fundraisers.

One of Moss’ favorite fundraisers was at Peninsula College.

Students used yards of duct tape to tape one of the coaches to the wall.

“After that they got to spray him with silly string,” Moss said.

“It was a great way to get young people involved.”
