NORDLAND — Barcy Fisher and Patty Buckland were named Marrowstone Island’s 2024 Citizens of the Year.
The annual award recognizes individuals who have made a lasting or significant difference in the quality of life on Marrowstone Island or in Jefferson County through their volunteerism, activism or leadership.
Island residents have nominated candidates for the award since 1973. The nominations are reviewed by a committee of former awardees.
Fisher and Buckland were chosen unanimously by this year’s selection committee based on their work to reopen the Nordland Store. The store, which had been closed since a fire in November 2020, reopened in May 2024.
The award recognizes Fisher and Buckland’s original concept to reopen the store as a community cooperative market, their successful fundraising campaign, their resolve while wading through the permitting process and their oversight of the renovation.
