BRINNON — The East Fork fire in The Brothers Wilderness of Olympic National Forest has spread to 10 acres in less than two weeks.
The fire is being left to burn itself out, a Hood Canal District spokesman reported on Friday.
Originally sighted on Oct. 4, the blaze is believed to have been started by a fire that hikers left burning.
The slow-moving fire is about a mile north of Lena Lake in heavy sub-alpine timber at the base of The Brothers.
Forest Service spokesman Brad Paul said a fly-over was to be conducted Friday because fire and smoke has increased during the week, a result of continued warm, dry weather.
Information from the fly-over will not be available until after the weekend.
Regardless, Paul said he doubted full-scale firefighting would be necessary.
“It’s just poking around a little bit,” he said Friday.
While the access road off Highway 101 and trails to Lena Lake remain open, the trail north of the lake leading to The Brothers Wilderness has been closed to hikers.
