Club members pay off tuna fundraiser wager by standing on Port Angeles corner in can costumes

PORT ANGELES — Community service club members paid off a tuna drive wager this week.

Judy Owen, Soroptimist International-Jet Set Club board member, and Gary Smith, president of the Nor’wester Rotary Club, dressed in tuna can costumes and stood at the corner of Front and Lincoln streets in downtown Port Angeles on Wednesday to pay off the bet with other service clubs that collected tuna to benefit the Port Angeles Food Bank.

The Port Angeles Rotary Club took first place in the “tuna challenge” with 3,522 cans donated, besting other clubs in the competition.

The drive brought in a total of 18,196 cans for the food bank.

In total, 10,139 cans were collected by community service clubs for the 20th annual Community Tuna Drive. Other community groups, churches and businesses collected 8,057 cans.

Nor’wester Rotary, which gathered 3,043 cans of tuna, was awarded the second place Silver Tuna Award in May.

Over the past 20 years, the tuna drive has amassed 415,000 cans of tuna worth $223,000.
