PORT ANGELES — Lower Elwha Klallam tribal officials will complete their long-term dream of expanding the tribal cemetery in the next two weeks.
The project will double the size of the cemetery, known as Place Road Cemetery, and allow for future generations of Lower Elwha tribal members to be buried alongside community members.
The cemetery is the largest Klallam cemetery still in existence, and is located just across Place Road from the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
“We know it dates back to the 1700s, and think it dates back farther than that,” said Gerald Charles Sr., a caretaker of the cemetery.
“We have been working to expand the cemetery since at least the 1960s. It is good to see it finally happening.”
