PORT ANGELES — Resident Kathryn Fridley’s homework paid off — her “Bounty and the Beasts” idea will be the theme of the 2003 Clallam County Fair.

Fridley entered 10 suggestions — all in one envelope — in the fair theme contest after researching previous years’ themes.

“We had 403 qualified entries in this year’s contest,” Clallam County Fair manager Sandy Bailey said after announcing this year’s winner.

Five judges and a facilitator selected Fridley’s entry based on its creativity, originality and appropriateness for the fair.

Fridley credits her inspiration for entering the theme contest to a Mark Twain story about Adam and Eve’s naming things.

“I love to name things, too,” she said.
