WEEKEND: Juried show opens at Northwind Arts Center

PORT TOWNSEND — Small Expressions 11, a juried show of small format works, opens today at the Northwind Arts Center.

The opening reception at the nonprofit center at 2409 Jefferson St. will be from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday during the Port Townsend Gallery Walk.

Jake Seniuk, who juried this year’s show, will give a talk about the show selections at 1 p.m. Sunday.

The show, which will run through Dec. 31, features works by regional artists in a variety of media, all fewer than 15 inches in size.

Awards at reception

Awards will be presented at the reception Saturday, with the Best in Show award to be given to Elissa Greisz for “Knotty.”

Merit awards are going to Marie Amerson for “Actor Under Red Light,” Mare Tietjen for “Enter Laughing” and Harold Nelson for “Blue Mountain.”

Seniuk recently retired from the Port Angeles Fine Arts Center, the Olympic Peninsula’s art museum, where he had served as director and curator since 1989, originating some 150 exhibitions.

As an artist, Seniuk has created introspective works that combine photography, text and sculptural elements.

His works have been exhibited at the National Gallery of American Art in Washington, D.C., and the Seattle Art Museum, among other venues.

He is a past recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in Photography, an Artist Trust Visual Artist Fellowship and the Logan Prize for Critical Writing in Photography, among others.

Seniuk earned a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from Harvard University in 1972 and his master’s degree in photography from the University of Washington in 1983.
