Today is the final day to drop off donations of school supplies and backpacks for local children in foster care.
Donations will be distributed to local children in foster care at the annual North Olympic Foster Parent Association’s Back to School Picnic & Backpack Giveaway on Sunday.

Derby car wash
PORT ANGELES — The Port Scandalous Roller Derby team will hold a car wash at Bada Bean! Bada Bloom, 1105 E. Front St., from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
The Port Scandalous Brawl Stars will head to Salem, Ore., to take on the Cherry City Derby Girls on Oct. 20.
Proceeds from the car wash will go toward trip expenses such as gas, rooms and food.
Junior rodeo
PORT ANGELES — The Peninsula Junior Rodeo will be held at the Clallam County Fairgrounds, 1608 W. 16 St., this weekend.
Early registration and check-in will be at 5:30 p.m. today.
Rodeo registration will be at 8 a.m. Saturday.
A sanctioned rodeo will begin soon after a 10 a.m. contestants meeting.
Rodeo registration Sunday will be at 7 a.m., with Cowboy Church at 8 a.m. and the sanctioned rodeo at 9 a.m.
Volunteers will staff the kitchen from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
Breakfast, lunch and a spaghetti, meatloaf, stew and homemade bread dinner will be served Saturday, with breakfast and lunch available Sunday.
Baked goods, including homemade coffee cakes and pies, also will be sold.

Music at McComb
SEQUIM — The Music at McComb free concert series continues with the Olympic Express Lite Band at 1 p.m. Sunday.
The group plays big-band music from the swing era.

Band benefit set
SEQUIM — The Sequim High School Band Boosters will hold a car wash benefit Saturday.
The car wash will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Tarcisio’s Restaurant’s parking lot, 609 W. Washington St.
Car washes will be available by donation.
Proceeds will help Sequim Band students attend band events during the 2012-2013 school year.
This includes performances in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in Seattle, at the Husky Band Day at a University of Washington football game, at Victoria Days and the Heritage Festival and at Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif.
These costs are not covered by the Sequim School District. Each student pays for travel.
Clallam Solar Tour
SEQUIM — A self-guided Clallam Solar Tour of three Sequim-area solar-powered homes and one business will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
A “Spin Your Meter Backward” presentation will be held at McComb Gardens, 751 McComb Road, at 10 p.m.

Beneficial beetles
SEQUIM — Clallam County Master Gardener Laurel Moulton will present “The Importance of Beetles to the Gardener” at a free Class Act at Woodcock Garden event at the Master Gardeners’ Woodcock Demonstration Garden, 2711 Woodcock Road, at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Moulton will present information on common ground beetles and other types of beneficial beetles that gardeners are likely to see in their home gardens.
She will discuss how to identify beneficial beetles, the tasks they perform in the garden and how gardeners can ensure they stay around.
Moulton has been a Master Gardener in Clallam County or in Oregon since 2006 and has taught basic entomology and other topics for Master Gardeners for three years.
She has a master’s degree in horticulture with a minor in entomology from Oregon State University, where she investigated the potential role of the common black European ground beetle in weed control in agricultural fields.
MAC swap meet
SEQUIM — A swap meet hosted by the Museum & Arts Center in the Sequim-Dungeness Valley will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
The swap meet will be at the MAC’s DeWitt Administration Center field, 544 N. Sequim Ave., directly across from the old Sequim High School brick building.
Vendors are invited to sign up for the meet.
The cost for renting a 10-foot-by-10-foot selling space is $20 per meet.
Sellers are expected to pay on the day, as there is no advance sign-up.
They also are responsible for providing their own display equipment.

SEQUIM — Tristan Atkins, director of aviation for the state Department of Transportation, will speak to Experimental Aviation Association 430 at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Atkins will present “Where the Aviation Tax Serves General Aviation.”

Family Fun Fest

Kickoff party set
SEQUIM — A free pre-performance kickoff party for an Aug. 31 concert by Rare Earth will be held at 7 Cedars Casino from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. today.
Rare Earth, the legendary rock band known for hits such as “Get Ready,” “(I Know) I’m Losing You” and “I Just Want to Celebrate,” will be the opening-night act Aug. 31 for the Sequim Balloon Festival, a hot-air ballooning extravaganza on Labor Day weekend.
Those attending tonight’s party — featuring Rare Earth tunes in the casino’s Club Seven — can buy tickets to the concert and enter a drawing for prizes.

VW car show set
PORT TOWNSEND — North Olympic Volksfair VI, a three-day car show for Volkswagen enthusiasts, will be held at Fort Worden State Park today through Sunday.
General admission gates open at noon today and at 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.
General admission is $15, and show car admission is $20 to $40.
Speakers will include Mark Buehler, one of the originators of the Cal-Look (California Look) VWs, who is bringing his 1951 VW Beetle split-window.
Winnie Meyers, the wife of Bruce Meyers — who created the Meyer’s Manx dune buggy and is known as a founding father of off-road racing — also will speak.
Damon Ristau’s documentary “The Bus,” a history of the VW bus in the U.S., will be screened.
Awards will be given in 28 categories, with judging Saturday and award presentation Sunday.
Cruises are planned for tonight and Saturday night.
Swap spaces are available at the event.
No state Discover Pass entry fee will be collected to attend this event.

Fire off rockets
PORT TOWNSEND — The Olympic Peninsula Rocketry 4-H Club will host Pasture Blaster for model rockets at a field on West Uncas Road off U.S. Highway 101 at Discovery Bay today, Saturday and Sunday.
Pasture Blaster is open from noon to 6 p.m. today, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.
The public is invited to watch or participate in the family-friendly event.
Rocket and food vendors will be on site, and there will be free RV and tent camping.
Model rockets will be set off from numerous launch pads: 12 pads for lower-power rockets, three for medium-power and two for high-power rockets.
Rockets can weigh as much as 3.3 pounds, including no more than 125 grams of propellant, with a maximum altitude of 3,000 feet.
Pad fees are $3 for adults and good for all three days. Children can use pads for free.
Club bumper stickers also will be sold for $6.

‘Humor in Paradise’
GARDINER — “Humor in Paradise,” a comedy revue to benefit the Paradise Theatre School of Chimacum, will be presented at the Gardiner Community Center, 980 Old Gardiner Road just off U.S. Highway 101 at 7:30 p.m. tonight.
The show, subtitled “An Evening of Amusing Treats by Peninsula Women,” drew a sellout crowd to its June 15 premiere at the Pope Marine Building in Port Townsend.
The benefit production, which runs an hour and 45 minutes with an intermission, will be repeated tonight in Gardiner.

No one, however, will be turned away for lack of funds, the show’s producers said.
Actors are donating their time and talent to the Paradise campaign to raise $50,000 for safety upgrades of its home, an old chapel at 161 Center Road.

Junior Triathlon
PORT TOWNSEND — A first-of-its kind Junior Triathlon, with recreation and “Iron Kid” divisions for children ages 7-14, will be held Saturday.
Day-of-race registration is available beginning at 9 a.m.

The event will begin with swimming at City Pool at Mountain View Commons, 1919 Blaine St., at 10 a.m.
After the swim, participants will bike to Blue Heron Middle School and then run on the school’s track.

Lake Crescent signing
FORKS — Peninsula Daily News historical columnist Alice Alexander will sign copies of her new book, Lake Crescent: Gem of the Olympics, at the Forks Timber Museum, 1421 S. Forks Ave., from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
It is hosted by museum curator Sherrill Fouts.
This is Alexander’s fifth book in a series of historical accounts of the North Olympic Peninsula.
Lake Crescent features many old and new photos of early resorts once located around the lake.
Most of the old photos come from the postcard collection of Rex Gerberding.
Others are from the Clallam County Historical Society and Olympic National Park collections.
A few are from residents of the lake, including area photographers such as Tom Roorda and John Gussman, and Carl Alexander.
The book is designed to showcase the large photographs along with early history of the resorts.
