Loved working as a nurse

Concerning kids and cancer, in 1992, while working as a nurse at the University of California-Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, I recall:

Working on the pediatric floor with all kinds of different child patients, some not so sick and some very, very sick.

Cancer and kids. I was not certified, but I assisted three times with chemotherapy for kids.

You have to be cheery, because they are.

You have to be positive, because they are.

You can’t be sad, because they are not.

But, their parents and family?

They are heartbroken.

They are sad and they are angry.

They feel betrayed by God.

They are not cheery.

So the little patients were always happy when we, the cheery nurses, came into their rooms.

Do you want to know why I loved being a nurse?

I have a thousand stories.

It seems like I have worked with thousands of nurses and doctors.

I loved my job.
