The editorial page of Aug. 15 asks good questions about the identification of “American” and “our values.”
Are we content to be a group of disparate, quarreling groups, promoting our race origins and political-religious loyalties?
The rioting and killing in the streets suggest that we prefer promoting and defending our differences.
“United” in “United States” is not a euphemism.
The bundle of arrows in the claw of the American eagle symbolizes the strength gained when weak parts assemble toward a common goal.
Unity is more that a noble ideal; it is a practical necessity, never more essential than now.
God bless these United States.
