LETTER: Shutdown is an assault on democracy by president

Assault on democracy

Much coverage of the standoff between Trump and his GOP supporters on the one hand and the opposition missed the following key issue.

This was not, first and foremost, about border security or even a wall.

It was about the balance of powers guaranteed by the Constitution that gives Congress the power to legislate and authorize spending and the president the power to veto such legislation.

Shutting down many critical branches of government that are unrelated to the disagreements on specific issues of funding is not only cruel to federal employees and those they serve.

It is an unconstitutional assault on democracy by a president who declared himself “proud to do it.”
