Many are defending Donald Trump by pointing to left-wing justifications for the riots of last summer.
It is true that too many liberals rationalized that violence because of our nation’s history of racial discrimination and economic inequality and what they consider the noxious policies of the Trump administration.
Nevertheless the willful myopia of the left is not in any way a defense for Donald Trump’s desecration of our political institutions and to compare one with the other would be a grotesque false equivalence.
Mr. Trump created a mob through months of lies about election fraud, invited the volatile crowd to Washington, D.C., just in time to interfere with the confirmation of the electoral votes, primed them with an incendiary speech and then stood by doing nothing while unhinged miscreants desecrated our Capitol.
And for what?
In the service of some preposterous scheme to illegally retain power even though he had lost the election.
Yes, the left has a lot to answer for.
Liberals are ignoring how their rationalizations have enabled a toxic deterioration in the substance and enforcement of law.
However, this irresponsible conduct of the part of the left has absolutely nothing to do with the political profanity that is Donald Trump.
Every day that Mr. Trump’s conviction is delayed is one more day of insult to our beloved Constitution.
The U.S. Senate must act, and now.
