LETTER: Save salmon

I was excited to read that Rep. Mike Simpson, a Republican from Idaho, has released a many-faceted proposal that would benefit every economic sector in the Northwest.

As written, it would save salmon and steelhead from extinction; fuel growth for the agriculture, recreation, and tribal economies; fulfill federal responsibilities and treaty obligations to tribes; create a clean, reliable and affordable electric power system; and create jobs throughout the region.

Simpson’s is a 10-year plan, but because salmon are nearly extinct in the Northwest, the communities that depend on them are at risk.

It’s time to act now.

To encourage this plan, you can contact Gov. Jay Inslee, Rep. Derek Kilmer and Senators Patty Murray and Marie Cantwell and ask them to work with Rep. Simpson and others to move as quickly as possible on this important plan.

This plan is good Earth stewardship, good government and good economics.
