LETTER: Responsibility lies with drivers, gun owners

I want to thank the author of the letter to the editor published May 3 under the heading “What does NRA propose for gun violence safety?” I found it very enlightening, especially the paragraph:

“Why do they oppose enhanced background checks, closing the gun show and private sales loopholes or making gun manufacturers responsible for their products, just like auto manufacturers?”

Just like auto manufacturers?

Really?

I have had a driver’s license for 50 years and during that entire time I was under the apparently mistaken impression that the driver at the wheel — like the person with their finger on the trigger of a gun — was responsible for any lives lost, bodily injuries or property damage.

How wrong I was.

If I run over someone, the car — and by extension the auto manufacturer — is responsible.

That is a big weight off my shoulders.
