LETTER: Reader finds commissioner’s letter to be morally obtuse

I read Clallam County Parks and Recreation District 1 Commissioner Jan Richardson’s Feb. 12 letter to the Peninsula Daily News concerning refugees with incredulity.

He argues, apparently seriously, that refugees are cowards who “shirk their duty to control their corrupt governments.”

His reasoning suggests that he would have closed our borders to Jews fleeing Germany before Hitler could implement the Final Solution.

He flat-out says, “closing our borders would force other countries’ migrants to reform the countries they are fleeing.”

Yeah, good luck reforming Bashar al-Assad’s murderous regime.

And I wish you well opposing the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.

Richardson also notes, with apparent approval, the following: “At different times, [the U.S.] has closed its doors to certain immigrants [like the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882?] and also put Japanese-Americans in prison camps during World War II.”

If this isn’t the most morally obtuse letter to the editor that the Peninsula Daily News receives this year, I don’t want to see the winner.
