LETTER: Reader doesn’t agree with Cal Thomas’ take on protests

It was no surprise to read Cal Thomas’ take on the protests happening in both Democratic and Republican cities and see that he once again unequivocally supports the man in the White House.

I wonder how he determines that the protesters are “‘… mostly spoiled young, white people being radicalized in universities?”

He states these “spoiled mobs have no gratitude for all they have been given.”

Gee, what would that be — economic collapse, skyrocketing unemployment, police violence, death from an out-of-control virus and a nation being led by an incompetent fool?

Many of these “spoiled brats” are also veterans.

Only very small areas in these cities are affected by what was originally peaceful protesting.

No one is happy about the vandalizing and the upheaval, but discontent grew exponentially when federal troops arrived with flash grenades, tear gas and welt-inducing marble-size balls filled with caustic chemicals.

Violence skyrocketed.

Civil rights leader John Lewis wrote an essay shortly before his recent death.

He wrote eloquently about how “each of us has a moral obligation to stand up, speak up and speak out … when you see something that is not right, you must say something.

“You must do something.

“Democracy … is an act, and each generation must do its part … I urge you to answer the highest calling of your heart and stand up for what you truly believe.”

He should know because this is exactly how he lived his life.

Present-day protesters are seeking to do the same.
