LETTER: Questioning rationale for mistreatment of immigrant children

According to recent reports from the southern border, children are still being separated from their parents and placed in facilities that do not provide toothpaste, soap, adequate food, water, medicine or sanitation.

Children are not being taken care of by Border Patrol agents, Immigration Custom Enforcement, or the Office of Refugee Resettlement.

The laws pertaining to juvenile incarceration are being violated by our elected and appointed officials.

There is no need to punish children by incarcerating them in cages and not providing adequate humane facilities.

Children from Central America who have been separated from their parents are being used as bargaining chips in the debate over immigration reform and social justice.

Children should not be caged like animals in detention centers that do not take care of their medical and physical needs.

Several children have died in custody due to lack of medical attention.

Sleeping on concrete floors with Mylar blankets in cyclone wire cages that house as many as 100-300 children per holding area is a recipe for outbreaks of influenza and body lice.

Children who are unrelated are often taking care of younger children who are incarcerated without anyone changing their diapers, or care taking for their needs.

Children are held in conditions that are unsanitary, unsafe and inadequate.

What is the rationale of the Trump administration to continue such harsh treatment of incarcerated children in custody at facilities on the southern border?
