LETTER: Focus on the real issues, not spectacle of Port Angeles port candidate protecting partner

The Peninsula Daily News devoted two front-page stories in July with concerns about the voter registration address of Michael Cobb, candidate for District 1 Port of Port Angeles commissioner [“Candidate Residency Challenged, False Address Listed; Man Says He Lives In District,” PDN, July 23; “Ballot Dispute Rejected,” PDN, July 28-29].

I was and am appalled that Cobb’s opponent, Colleen McAleer, and the Peninsula Daily News made such an ill-advised public disclosure regarding Michael Cobb’s effort to protect his partner, who has said she is a victim of domestic violence.

I think I know why Michael Cobb’s opponent is trying to make such a big deal out of this issue.

If she can make him withdraw from the election, then the public will not know how much stronger Michael’s credentials and experience are than the incumbent.

Michael has a master’s degree in business administration in accounting and a career in lending, international business, consulting and owning and running a small business with more than 100 employees.

What I do not understand is why the Peninsula Daily News chose to participate in this distraction rather than a discussion of credentials and issues related to the port.

In the future, please focus on the real issues of port management and who is the best qualified candidate.

Martha M. Moyer,

Sequim
