LETTER: Doesn’t want new missile magazine at Indian Island

Disappointed in missiles

I was disappointed to read about the Navy’s proposal to build five new missile magazines on Indian Island, for a few reasons (“New missile magazines proposed for Naval Magazine Indian Island,” PDN, Jan. 19).

The most obvious reason is that I don’t want to live in close proximity to missiles (or anymore missiles than there already are) as they are dangerous to all of us who live nearby.

After reading the lengthy environmental asessment on the Navy’s website regarding the project, I’m disappointed again to hear about the clearing of 13 acres of second growth fir and the building of thousands of feet of new roads.

The assessment assures they will only cut the trees when the bald eagles aren’t nesting, but what about when the birds return the following year, to find their homes destroyed?

And what about the other wildlife that make a home in those forests?

In the assessment they claim 13 acres of Indian Island will be cleared for building.

That’s a lot of acreage lost for something so controversial.

I hope new missiles will not be built in those important forests.
