I am writing to express my deep disappointment in the behavior of all Democratic congressmen and women during President Trump’s speech to a joint session of Congress on March 4.
Their refusal to stand and honor the courageous individuals who were recognized, Americans who have suffered profound loss or personal tragedy, was not only disheartening but also an insult to the very people they were elected to represent.
Among those present were an individual battling brain cancer, showing incredible strength in the face of adversity; Gold Star families who lost loved ones during the tragic withdrawal from Afghanistan; a grieving mother whose daughter was murdered by a violent illegal immigrant; a young man whose father, a police officer, was killed in the line of duty; and a girl who has suffered permanent physical injury after being struck by a volleyball served by a transgender athlete in competition.
Regardless of political affiliation, these individuals deserved recognition, respect and honor for their sacrifices.
The Democrats’ refusal to acknowledge them was immature, disruptive and demeaning to all Americans.
A moment that should have been about unity and shared compassion was instead met with partisan pettiness.
As public servants, their duty is to represent all Americans, not just those who align with their political agenda.
I urge them to reflect on the message their actions sent to the American people and to conduct themselves with the dignity and respect that their position demands.
