LETTER: Cheri Van Hooper would be excellent addition to Jefferson hospital district

I am so pleased to support Cheri Van Hoover, a patient advocate and health care leader, for Jefferson hospital district commissioner.

Her professional experience has given her a broad background from which to draw.

Cheri has worked in high-risk hospital settings ranging from private practice, to Kaiser Permanente Hospital, to the University of California’s San Francisco School of Medicine.

She instructs graduate students on health advocacy, research and policy.

She has published award-winning scholarly professional papers.

In addition, she has a broad business background, consistently had successful private businesses and currently operates a bed-and-breakfast in Port Hadlock.

Over the years, I cannot recall a time that Cheri has not been involved in her community.

Master Gardeners, volunteering and instructing farm interns to offering free monthly dances at the Port Townsend Grange are just a few examples.

Additionally, she has been an exceptional personal support to her family and friends during health crises and tragedies.

Her compassion and patience helped her father navigate the medical system as he dealt with esophageal cancer.

She assisted her best friend in home hospice as he was dying from AIDS.

She stays calm and has the ability to see situations from both patient and provider points of view, which I have found invaluable.

Lastly, Cheri is the only candidate who would add a member to the board who is not a Port Townsend resident, thus offering a wider Jefferson County perspective.

County residents would be lucky to have Cheri on the board of hospital commissioners.

Leslie Payton,

Port Ludlow
