Salish Sea Early Music Festival to present concert Sunday

PORT TOWNSEND — The Salish Sea Early Music Festival will present “Springtime Baroque: Airs for Spring” at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Soprano Arwen Myers, harpsichordist Elisabeth Wright and Baroque flutist Jeffrey Cohan will perform at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 1020 Jefferson St.

Admission is by a $20 to $30 freewill offering at the door; youths 18 and younger will be admitted free.

The program features spring-inspired music including selections from Johann Sebastian Bach’s Easter Oratorio, Louis-Nicolas Clérambault’s cantata “Orphée,” Toussaint Bordet’s airs celebrating spring for soprano with flute, Couperin’s harpsichord solos “Les Fauvétes Plaintives” and “La Linote-éfarouchée” and Georg Frideric Handel’s “Singe, Seele” (Sing, my soul) and “Flammende Rose” (Flaming Rose) from his “9 German Arias.”

Myers is a Portland-based soprano who has performed with such ensembles as the Portland Baroque Orchestra, Early Music Vancouver, Pacific MusicWorks, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, American Bach Soloists, Seraphic Fire, Bach Akademie Charlotte and Bach Collegium San Diego.

She is the executive and co-artistic director of Northwest Art Song.

Wright has taught harpsichord for nearly four decades at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music in Bloomington, Ind.

Cohan, a Baroque flutist, is the artistic director of the Salish Sea Early Music Festival.

Remaining performances in this year’s festival include:

• Psalms, 1620; Irish, 1720; and Folksong, 1820, Oleg Timofeyev, renaissance lute and seven-string guitar, and Jeffrey Cohan, renaissance, baroque and eight-keyed flutes.

• Baroque Concerti, 2 p.m. Sunday, May 26, Elizaveta Miller, harpsichord; Carrie Krause, violin; Elisabeth Phelps, violin; Victoria Gunn, viola; Adaiha MacAdam-Somer, cello; and Jeffrey Cohan, baroque flute.

• Johann Sebastian Bach, 2 p.m. June 30, harpsichordist Irene Roldan and flutist Jeffrey Cohan.
