Olympic Theatre Arts offers classes for children

SEQUIM — Olympic Theatre Arts in Sequim is accepting registrations for its Children’s Theatre fall class sessions focusing on the season of ghost and goblins.

Classes at the OTA Center, 414 N. Sequim Ave., range in cost from $80 to $120.

Wednesday’s acting classes with Lisa Mantchev, called “Theatrical Spectres,” will cast students in roles portraying spooky characters such as Edgar Allan Poe and his raven or Jacob Marley’s visit to Ebenezer Scrooge.

These vignettes will be staged for presentation to the public during OTA’s Haunting House, an interactive theatrical event scheduled for mid-October.

Thursday’s class session, presented by Bonne Smith, will explore stage makeup especially tailored for ghoulish effects. The students will work with the acting class during OTA Haunting House.

Both classes are open to youths ages 8 to 18.

For younger thespians, OTA offers Jellybeans, presented by Lorra Cornetet. The class, for children from ages 4 to 7, will explore storytelling and theater basics through imaginative, interactive games and song.

This 10-week session will end with a showcase performance for family and invited guests.

Wednesday and Thursday classes are $120 each for the equivalent of a two-hour-per-week, 10-week session.

Tuesday classes are one hour long for 10 weeks for $80. Tuition assistance is available.

“We are very committed to introducing the youth in our community to the magic of live theater,” said Carol Willis, OTA executive director.

“Introducing theater into a child’s life helps to foster self-esteem and self-confidence; it teaches them how to collaborate on a project and to express themselves. These are life skills that will only serve to strengthen future generations.”

Registration forms for all classes are available online at www.olympic theatrearts.org or by visiting the business office, open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.
