Cellist to perform concerts in Port Angeles, Forks

PORT ANGELES — Cellist Ian Maksin will perform concerts in Port Angeles and Forks as part of his Cello for Peace Tour.

Maksin will perform at 7 p.m. Monday at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 301 E. Lopez Ave. in Port Angeles, and again at 7 p.m. Wednesday at First Congregational Church United Church Of Christ, 280 Spartan Ave., Forks.

Tickets are $15 per person at www.ianmaksin.com or $20 at the door.

Maksin, a cellist, composer and multilingual vocalist, studied at the School for Gifted Children in St. Petersburg, Russia, then known as Leningrad, and at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City.

After several years in the classical genre, Maksin decided to follow a different musical path.

“At some point I realized that music is much more than mere entertainment,” Maksin said. “Music is one of most powerful and unifying forces in the world, capable of healing, inspiring, bringing people together and bringing peace among them. I believe that cello will save the world.”

His musical experience, which includes rock and blues guitar, jazz and world music, allowed him develop his own style as both a musician and a composer.

Maksin sings in 30 languages, including Ukrainian, Russian, English, Farsi, Armenian, French, Italian, Arabic, Hebrew, Mongolian and Bambara, one of the West African languages.

His original compositions often are influenced by the ethnic music from countries and regions he has toured, such as Mongolia, West Africa, the Middle East, the Balkans and Andalusia.
