WEEKEND: Chili cook-off, Seahawks ‘Rock Out’ among Peninsula offerings

A discussion on peace between Israel and Palestine, a chili cook-off and outdoor club hikes are among this weekend’s offerings on the North Olympic Peninsula.

PORT ANGELES

Seahawks event

PORT ANGELES — Community residents are invited to join Peninsula College students and staff in a special “Rock Out-Hawk Out” event celebrating the Seattle Seahawks from noon to 1:30 p.m. today.

The event is at the main campus, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd., rain or shine.

It will start with a barbecue and tailgate gathering on the campus quad and will include competitions, game day music and giveaways, followed by a group picture.

Attendees are asked to wear Seahawks gear or blue-and-green attire.

COASST training

PORT ANGELES — The Coastal Observation and Seabird Survey Team (COASST) will have a training session in the Clallam County Courthouse boardroom, 223 E. Fourth St., from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

COASST is looking for volunteers to help test a new marine debris program.

Participants will survey debris two times a month through March, share feedback with COASST via email or phone and use new versions of survey materials based on participant feedback.

There is no obligation to continue marine debris surveys after March.

Run-a-Mutt slated

PORT ANGELES — A Run-a-Mutt Canine Fun Run is slated at the Clallam County Fairgrounds from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

Registration begins at 9:30 a.m.

Forms are available at Angeles Electric, 524 E. First St.; Family Veterinary Clinic, 3217 E. Mahogany St.; Olympic Peninsula Humane Society, 2105 U.S. Highway 101; and Necessities & Temptations, 217 N. Laurel St.

There will be a costume contest with cash prizes.

Proceeds benefit the Port Angeles Lions Club and the Humane Society.

‘Know Your Compost’

PORT ANGELES — The Sierra Club will host a forum, “Savor Your Soil: Know Your Compost,” in the Port Angeles Library’s Raymond Carver Room, 2210 S. Peabody St., from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

The film “Sludge Diet” will be shown.

It covers how municipalities may handle sewage wastes, what sewage wastes may consist of that are turned into fertilizer, how it is marketed and farmers’ points of view.

The Sierra Club believes citizens have a right to know the contents of the commercial compost being sold to mix in their soils and grow their food with, according to a news release.

Handouts will be available, and there will be discussion including what information citizens would like to see on compost labels and how to get transparent labeling.

Sons of Norway dance

PORT ANGELES — The Sons of Norway will host their weekly folk-ballroom-swing dance at 131 W. Fifth St. from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday.

Dance instruction is planned beforehand at 6:30 p.m.

Admission is $2 for members and $3 for nonmembers.

This is an all-ages, no-smoking and no-alcohol event.

Community shred

FORKS — A community shred event hosted by the Forks Food Bank will be held at Forks Avenue Real Estate, 711 S. Forks Ave., from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

There is a limit of three bags or three boxes per vehicle.

Cash and canned protein items are encouraged as donations for the food bank.

Rainforest Council

FORKS — The next general meeting of the Rainforest Council for the Arts will be in the Klahn Room at the Forks Library, 171 S. Forks Ave., at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Topics include use of the new Rainforest Arts Center, fundraising and planning for upcoming projects.

All members and individuals interested in the arts are encouraged to attend.

Mason installations

FORKS — Free & Accepted Masons invite the public to attend the installation of their 2014-15 officers during a ceremony at the Masonic Lodge, 130 W. Division St.

The installation starts at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Outdoor Club hike

FORKS — The Olympic Outdoor Club will hike the Elk Lake Trail on Saturday.

This is an easy hike of 4 miles round trip, with an elevation gain of 500 feet and a high point at 1,300 feet.

QUILCENE

Outdoor Club hike

QUILCENE — The Olympic Outdoor Club will hike the Lower Big Quilcene River Trail on Sunday.

This is a relatively easy hike of 10 miles round trip, with an elevation gain of 800 feet and a high point at 2,000 feet.

PORT LUDLOW

Chili cook-off

PORT LUDLOW — A chili cook-off to determine the “best Republican chili cook” will be held at the Port Ludlow Beach Club, 121 Marina View Drive, at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The event is sponsored by the Jefferson County Republican Party.

Republican candidates running for office in the November election have been invited to speak at the event.

The cost to attend and sample the chili entries by local cooks is $15 per person.

Side dishes and sodas will be provided.

PORT TOWNSEND

Fort Townsend walk

PORT TOWNSEND — The Olympic Peninsula Explorers will sponsor a 5K/10K walk in Old Fort Townsend State Park on Saturday.

Sign-ups begin at Subway, 1300 Water St., between 9:15 a.m. and 9:30 a.m.

All walkers must sign up.

The walk is free unless participants want American Volkssport Association credit.

A state parks pass is required to park inside the park.

Maps of the walk will be given out at the sign-up location.

Fort Townsend State Park is situated atop a 150-foot cliff, offering a scenic view of Admiralty Inlet, Port Townsend Bay and the Cascades.

WAVE food drive

The annual WAVE (What A Valuable Experience) food drive will take place Saturday at several locations.

Community donations can be made all day at QFC stores in Port Townsend and Port Hadlock and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at these participating churches:

Check donations can be made payable to the Jefferson County Food Bank.

Financial donations also can be mailed to the Port Townsend Food Bank at P.O. Box 1975, Port Townsend, WA 98368, and are distributed to the Port Townsend, Chimacum, Quilcene and Brinnon food banks.

Author-poet talk

PORT TOWNSEND — Author and poet Kim Stafford will read at The Writers’ Workshoppe and Imprint Books, 820 Water St., at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Admission is free.

Stafford will read from his two latest books, Wind on the Waves and 100 Tricks Every Boy Can Do.

SEQUIM

Writers on the Spit

SEQUIM — This week’s Fourth Friday Reading will feature local writers Teya Priest Johnston and Craig Andrews at Rainshadow Coffee Roasting Co., 157 W. Cedar St.

The public is invited to arrive at 6 p.m. today for free readings to begin at 6:30 p.m.

Johnston, a poet and short-story writer, is inspired by nature and the view from her home on Blue Mountain, according to a news release.

She has lived the majority of her life on the Olympic Peninsula but was born in North Carolina, and much of her writing reflects a Southern flavor.

Andrews does most of his writing at 4 a.m. He is a deep believer in the transformative power of the written and spoken word.

Writers on the Spit, the Sequim group that hosts the Fourth Friday Reading Series, invites writers of prose and poetry to sign up for the five-minute open-mic readings that will follow Johnston and Andrews.

Participants submit their names at the beginning of the evening, and a drawing of names is held before the microphone opens. Readings end at 8 p.m.

Roller derby bout

SEQUIM — The Port Scandalous Strait Shooters will play against Seattle’s Rat Lab at the Boys & Girls Club, 400 W. Fir St., on Saturday.

Doors open at 6 p.m., with the bout starting at 6:30 p.m.

Admission is $10 in advance or $12 at the door.

Tickets can be purchased at Drake’s U-Bake Pizza & Subs, 819 S. Lincoln St., Port Angeles, or online at www.brownpapertickets.com.

The event is also a holiday food drive to benefit the Port Angeles Food Bank.

For every item brought, attendees will receive a raffle ticket for the night’s giveaway.

Some things to bring include stuffing, cranberry sauce, chicken stock, pie crusts and mashed potatoes.

Monetary donations are also accepted.

A beer garden for those 21 and older with valid ID will be provided, plus concessions by the Boys & Girls Club.

A costume contest will be held at half-time. Winners will receive tickets to the Nov. 22 game.

Also Saturday, the Strait Shooters will host an after-party at Bar N9ne, 229 W. First St., where ­Jell-O shots will be sold. Proceeds go toward Port Scandalous roller derby.
