PORT TOWNSEND — For his 24th recording project, harpist David Michael sought to remember his musical partner of four decades.

Randy Mead, who died suddenly of a heart attack in August 2012, was a flutist and close friend who profoundly influenced Michael, opening his ears to new musical frontiers.

Mead encouraged Michael to play other things besides the harp, and even invented some instruments Michael learned to play.

The new CD, “Above the Clouds,” is an atmospheric suite in 16 movements, played on Celtic harp, guitar, hammered dulcimer, piano and other instruments.

Mead’s spirit, Michael says, hovered over his shoulder as he composed this music.

Recorded by Neville Pearsall at Port Townsend’s Synergy Sound, “Above the Clouds” is available at Phoenix Rising Bookstore and the Wine Seller, both downtown, and via www.CDBaby.com and Michael’s company, www.PurnimaProductions.com. To reach Michael directly, phone 360-379-9732 or email harp@olympus.net.

Grammy award-winning bansuri, or bamboo flute, player Steve Gorn appears on the album, as does Ann Lindquist on bass and contrabass flutes.

Local musician Paul Becker played recorders while Benjy Wertheimer, a longtime friend of both Mead and Michael, plays the esraj, an Indian harp. Gwen Franz, who is known for playing viola with the Seattle Symphony, contributed viola and violin tracks while Port Townsend’s Joe Breskin and Simon Lynge also appear.
