OUTDOORS: Port Townsend man wins Sekiu halibut derby

SEKIU — Nick Gaikowski of Port Townsend won the Clallam Bay Sekiu Chamber of Commerce halibut derby Saturday.

Gaikowski caught a 78.5-pound halibut, which netted him $790 ($10 for each pound).

Second place and $400 went to Gene Cox of Spanaway with a 30.5 pound fish for $400, and Nora Parker of Sekiu took third place with a 28.5-pounder that earned her $100.

Jesse Yaks of Port Orchard won $100 for catching the largest sea bass, a 7.6-pounder.

Despite foggy and windy conditions, 233 anglers participated in the derby.
