PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles boys soccer team won a pair of games in two days, beating Kingston at Monroe Field 5-0 after defeating North Mason on the road 5-1 on Friday.
It was the fifth- and sixth-straight victories for the Roughriders, who moved up to second place in the Olympic League at 7-1 (21 points). Matthew Miller had four goals in both games, giving him 25 goals and four assists, well on his way of breaking the Roughriders’ single season goal record of 30 held by Rick Smith.
“Port Angeles had to play back to back games for the first time this season but managed to get the job done for a 9-point week,” said coach Chris Saari.
Against Kingston, Oliver Martinez got the Riders on the board early in the seventh min. He followed a shot from short range, cleaning up the rebounds for an unassisted goal. It was the second goal in two games for Martinez.
Miller scored for the Riders in the 16th minute on a cross from Martinez from the right side. Miller connected with the cross with a volley to the far post.
Miller struck again before halftime in the 33rd minute on a corner kick from Kanyon Anderson, who got the assist.
Miller picked up his third goal early in the second half in the 45th minute on another pass from Martinez, who collected his second assist of the game. Finally, he scored his fourth in the 49th minutes on a penalty kick after he was fouled in the box. It was Miller’s fourth four-goal game (a haul) this season.
Saari named Miller his offensive player of the match, Martinez, Anderson and Sawyer Davis his transition players of the match and Grant Butterworth his defensive player of the match.
The Riders (9-1-0 overall) have a huge game at 7 p.m. Tuesday against first-place Bainbridge (7-0-0, 8-0-0) at Wally Sigmar Field.
Port Angeles 5, North Mason 1
BELFAIR — The Roughriders got on the board right away against North Mason on a Miller goal in the fourth minute on a through ball from Oliver Martinez, who got the assist. Miller got in behind the Bulldogs’ defense and scored with a shot to the far post.
Miller picked up his second goal on a Kanyon Anderson header assist to Miller, who settled the ball from the 10 yards out and volleyed a shot into the back of the next.
Martinez scored his first goal of the season in the 32nd minute on an assist from Miller, who passed the ball across the goal mouth from left to right. Martinez collected the crossing pass and knocked it in to the far post.
The Bulldogs were able to score in the 52nd minute to make it 3-1, but Port Angeles quickly regained the momentum two minutes later on a long throw-in by Jay Lieberman. Miller headed the ball into the Bulldogs’ penalty box, and as North Mason’s keeper came out to try and get the ball, Miller headed it a second time into the empty net.
Finally, Miller finished off the scoring in the 55th minute with another assist from Anderson.
Grant Butterworth said “Great team win. Very happy that everyone is staying focused,” said defensive back Grant Butterworth.
“Tonight was a great performance,” said Taihvan Lyle. “Lately, it’s been great to see everyone getting involved in these big wins. The amount of improvement from last year is incredible.”
Saari named Miller his offensive player of the match, Martinez, Anderson and Lieberman his transition players of the match and Lyle and Butterworth the defensive players of the match.
Sequim 5, Bremerton 0
SEQUIM — The Sequim soccer team got a goal and two assists from Josh Alcaraz and a crucial penalty kick save from goalkeeper Kaiden Tosland in a 5-0 win over Bremerton, the Wolves’ third straight Olympic League win.
Sequim got off to a fast start with a goal in the first minute on a header by Alcaraz on a cross from Jayden Halladay. Alcaraz picked up his first assist in the 25th minute, making a through pass to Colten Anderson for a goal.
Bremerton was fouled in the box, but Tosland came up with what coach Ian McCallum called an oustanding save to deny the Knights. The Wolves quickly took advantage with a solo effort by Colten Wagner, who beat a defender, then lifted a shot over the Bremerton keeper who had come out to challenge.
Ten minutes into the second half, Wes Schroeder picked up an assist with a pass that was missed by the Bremerton defense. Nico Musso was the recipient and scored to make it 4-0.
Finally, Bjorn Hendrikson got the Wolves’ final goal off a corner kick by Alcaraz.
“Lots of great performances. A goal and two assists from Josh and wonderful goals by Colten and Bjorn,” McCallum said. “But, the key moment in the game was the PK save by Kaiden.
“This has been a great week fro the team, but we need to keep it going and stay healthy,” McCallum said. “A lot of credit goes to the coaching staff who are committed to the players’ development.
McCallum also gave credit to JV coaches Isaac Peiffer and Javier Gomez, who have their team at an 8-1 record.
Sequim (5-2-0, 5-2-0) hosts North Mason (1-7-0, 2-7-1) at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
