James Slayton of Port Ludlow rode his bicycle to the beach at Point Hudson in Port Townsend to practice with poi, a Maori word meaning a ball on a cord.

Poi is a form of dance, where the balls on the ends of tethers are swung through patterns.

The technique was traditionally used by Maori men to strengthen the wrists for battle.
