COLLEGE SOCCER: Peninsula squads crush Edmonds

PORT ANGELES — The Peninsula College men’s soccer team showed it’s not missing a beat from its past two NWAC championship seasons, blowing out Edmonds 12-0 on Saturday at Wally Sigmar Field.
The women, meanwhile, also won with a 5-0 shutout, bouncing back from a tie last week against Skagit Valley.
The men scored their first goal just one minute into the match, a tally from Angel Sandoval assisted by Noa Garfias.
The Pirates went into the half up 4-0 and erupted for eight goals in the second half, including six goals in less than eight minutes at the end of the match.
Austin Collins led the way with four goals and three assists for 11 points out of the match. Jeremy Obah had two goals, both assisted by Jamie Joyce, who finished with a goal and three assists.
Garfias had a goal and three assists, while Oskar Koelle and Sohta Takemura each had a goal. Mekhi Ashby of Sequim also scored a goal, while Edwin Diaz and Max Pieper each had assists.
Goalkeeper Max Woithe made a pair of saves to earn the shutout.
The Pirates finished with 34 shots, including 24 on goal, to two for Edmonds. Peninsula has scored 19 goals in its past two wins. After Saturday’s performance, Collins is second in the NWAC in points with 13, while Joyce leads the conference in assists with six and Garfias is second with five. This despite Peninsula playing fewer non-exhibition games — three — than most of the teams in the NWAC, some of which have played as many as nine games.
Peninsula (2-0, 3-0) next plays at Everett (0-1, 1-2) on Wednesday.
Women’s game
The Peninsula College women’s soccer team got goals from five different players and allowed zero shots on goal in a 5-0 victory over Edmonds.
Shiori Shintaku, Kasi Baker, Kamalani Yamashita and Baylee Rawlinson all scored for the Pirates. Elise Maffeo and Atianna Tauiai Fuama each had assists.
It was actually the Pirates’ (1-0-1) first non-exhibition win of the year. Whatcom is off to a 2-0 start to lead the North Region early.
Peninsula next plays at Everett (0-1, 2-2).
