Fairytale takes the stage this weekend

PORT TOWNSEND — The final weekend of Key City Public Theatre’s Shakespeare in the Park won’t be Shakespeare.
Julia Izumi’s “Sometimes the Rain, Sometimes the Sea,” a fairytale about a Little Rain Cloud that falls in love with a human, will be presented at 6 p.m. Friday through Sunday at Chetzemoka Park, 1000 Jackson St., in Port Townsend.
Admission is pay-what-you-wish. Play-goers are encouraged to bring camp chairs, beach chairs, blankets and warm clothes for the cool evenings in Chetzemoka Park. As for supper, picnics are welcome; treats are also available for purchase.
Port Townsend’s own Emily Huntingford, who performed with Key City Public Theatre since 2008, is now the artistic producer of Dacha Theatre, a Seattle-based company specializing in devised, immersive and playful work, organizers said.
Last year, Dacha brought DICE: Romeo and Juliet to Port Townsend audiences, and this time the company will bring a collision of multiple narratives, framed as a sort-of retelling of The Little Mermaid that erupts into a voyage through Hans Christian Andersen’s tempestuous real-life relationships.
“Brimming with heartfelt candor, ‘Sometimes the Rain, Sometimes the Sea’ is a deep-sea dive into what love really looks like,” organizers said.
Fresh off her first year in the University of Washington’s master’s of fine arts program, Kate Drummond, Dacha’s co-artistic director, directs “Sometimes the Rain, Sometimes the Sea.”
