Sequim man dies after he was hit by garbage truck

SEQUIM — A Sequim man has died after he was struck by a garbage truck, reported the Sequim Police Department.

Sgt. Carolee Edwards said Thomas Roy Allen, 71, was struck on Monday afternoon on the 100 block of West Silberhorn Road while he was cycling down the road from his home.

An Olympic Disposal System garbage truck was traveling eastbound on the road and started to back up in the roadway when it hit Allen at 12:24 p.m., Edwards said.

The truck driver is not suspected of criminal activity, and the State Patrol ruled out impairment, she said.

Trooper Katherine Weatherwax, State Patrol spokesperson, said the agency is providing Sequim Police technical assistance through the incident investigation.

Allen’s next of kin was notified later in the afternoon, Edwards said.

The City of Sequim blocked off the entrance to West Silberhorn Road for about four hours.
