COLLEGE SOCCER: Peninsula men win finale, prepare to defend title

PORT ANGELES — The Peninsula College men’s soccer team wrapped up its undefeated regular season with a 4-1 win over Everett on Saturday.

During the regular season, the No. 1-ranked men beat Tacoma in a rematch of the 2019 championship match and beat Whatcom, the No. 2-ranked ranked team in the NWAC.

Now, the Pirates have an NWAC title to defend. The men (12-0-1 North Region, 15-0-1 overall) wrapped up the North Region title and top seed out of the North with a 0-0 tie last week in a rematch with Whatcom.

The Pirates will get a bye in the opening round Wednesday, then host a quarterfinal match Saturday at Wally Sigmar Field. The winner of that match heads to the Starfire Soccer Complex in Tukwila for the NWAC Final Four.

The time of that match has not been announced yet. The men will play Wednesday’s winner of the South Region No. 2 and the West Region No. 3 — Bellevue vs. Rogue.

In Saturday’s win, the men got goals from Jonathan DeMotta, Nico Hernandez, Chunghwan Lee and Dylan Pauw and assists from Nicholas Namwali, Tim Deser and Kai Beigler.

The men came close to their fifth straight shutout. Everett scored in the 70th minute, snapping a 460-minute scoreless streak.

Women

The Pirates women, also undefeated, will also host a quarterfinal match at Sigmar Field on Saturday’s game. The women won Saturday by forfeit as Everett was forced to suspend its women’s soccer program this season.

The women will likewise play the Wednesday winner of South Region No. 2 and West Region No. 3 — Pierce vs. Portland.

The Pirates women have an even more impressive scoreless streak heading into the postseason. The women (14-0-1 North Region, 15-0-2 overall) have gone eight games, not counting Everett forfeits, without allowing a goal — that’s 745 straight minutes, not counting stoppage time, without allowing a goal.

The women are also ranked No. 1 in the NWAC and No. 3 in the nation among Division II community colleges. The Pirates men are ranked No. 6 in the nation.
