SEQUIM — Four people escaped a rollover wreck on U.S. Highway 101 near Old Gardiner Road east of Sequim after the rental car they were in rolled into a ditch and caught fire.

The wreck was reported at about 3:20 p.m. Sunday and the highway was still blocked at about 4:20 p.m., said Assistant Chief Tony Hudson of Clallam County Fire District No. 3. The wreck was cleared by 5:06 p.m.

State Patrol Trooper Chelsea Hodgson said in a tweet that the family was visiting from France. The wreck happened when the driver fell asleep and drove onto the shoulder, she said.

An off-duty Lakewood police officer and his wife, a nurse, helped extricate the family from the vehicle.

Hudson said the four people inside had escaped with minor injuries. He was not aware of anyone being transported to a hospital.
