Firefighter tackle roof fire in Port Angeles

PORT ANGELES — A spark from burning cardboard ignited the roof of a Port Angeles home Sunday afternoon.

Shaughn Mellor, one of the renters at 1358 Campbell Ave., said the fire started as he was burning cardboard in the home’s fireplace.

A friend, who arrived about two hours before a barbecue Mellor had planned, ran toward the house as he saw flames and smoke shooting from the roof.

There were two people, a dog and a cat home when the roof caught fire. No one was injured, Mellor said.

Mellor said he wouldn’t have known about the fire if his friend hadn’t shown up early.

When firefighters arrived, the roof was about 25 percent involved, said Port Angeles Fire Department Capt. Kelly Ziegler.

Ziegler said it was likely that a spark from the cardboard landing on the roof started the fire.

The fire stayed outside the home, but firefighters broke into the charred roof to fully extinguish the fire.

Mellor said there were already plans to replace the roof this summer.

Firefighters told Mellor occupants could go back inside once they finished clearing out the fire.
