Fire south of Port Townsend out before firefighters arrive

PORT TOWNSEND — Residents at Four Corners Olympic Mobile Village south of Port Townsend put out a fire so quickly Tuesday that they beat firefighters.

An outbuilding full of kindling engulfed in flames at the mobile home park at 6062 state Highway 20 was reported to East Jefferson Fire-Rescue at about 3:29 p.m.

When firefighters arrived, they found that neighbors had already extinguished the fire using three garden hoses, said Bill Beezley, department spokesman.

“They did a great job,” he said.

Firefighters sprayed down the woodshed and overhauled it upon arrival.

The neighbors prevented the fire from spreading to nearby homes and prevented it from doing much damage to the outbuilding, Beezley said.

The outbuilding was used to store kindling and had no heat sources or electricity, he said.

It wasn’t yet clear Tuesday afternoon exactly how the fire started, but Beezley said it didn’t appear to be suspicious.

The homeowner told firefighters he hadn’t been in the shed since Monday and had no idea how it could have started.
