BUSINESS BRIEFS: Program offered for adult cancer survivors in Port Angeles starting Oct. 12 . . . and other items

PORT ANGELES — The Olympic Peninsula YMCA, 302 S. Francis St., will offer area cancer survivors access to a free strength-and-wellness program.
The 12-week program, “Exercise and Thrive,” is available to all adult cancer survivors 21 and older, regardless of when their cancer occurred.
Participants must be 90 days out of treatment and have medical clearance to participate.
The curriculum was developed by the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle after what the center identified as gaps in support for cancer survivors after treatment.
Participants in this program strengthen muscles, increase flexibility and improve endurance while receiving health-and-wellness coaching from YMCA personal trainers during biweekly sessions, according to a news release.
They also are introduced to mind/body activities like yoga and healthy eating tips.
The ultimate goal of the program, according to the release, is to help survivors develop their own physical fitness regimen that they can continue on their own after the program ends.
The next session of “Exercise and Thrive” in Port Angeles will begin in October.
Contact Karen Rushby, a physical therapist at Olympic Medical Center who specializes in cancer rehabilitation, at 360-417-7116 for a consultation and to receive a medical screening/permission form.
The 12-week session will be held Mondays and Wednesdays from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. beginning Monday, Oct. 12.
For more information, contact Mikki Reidel, health and well-being coordinator at the YMCA, at 360-452-9244 or mikkireidelymca@gmail.com.
“Exercise and Thrive” is funded in part by the Y’s annual Power of Community Campaign.

B&B anniversary
PORT ANGELES — Bill and Laura Segil are celebrating their first anniversary as owners of Sea Cliff Gardens Bed & Breakfast, 397 Monterra Drive.
The Sigels purchased the inn in 2014 and moved here from Southern California after looking at several properties for sale both here and in Oregon.
Sea Cliff Gardens was ideal for them, according to a news release, as it combined gardening and hospitality all in one location.
The original owners and builders of the inn in 1998 were BJ and Frank Paton, and at that time, it was known as BJ’s Garden Gate.
The Segils are the third owners of the inn, which is known for ocean views, waterfront gardens that were featured in Country Gardens magazine in 2007, Victorian-era furnishings brought from Europe by the original owners and a full breakfast.
All five rooms offer water and garden views, fireplaces, hot tubs and numerous amenities.
