NEWS BRIEFS: No landing practice this week at Coupeville air station . . . and other items

COUPEVILLE — There will be no field carrier landing practice operations for aircraft stationed at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island at the outlying field in Coupeville today through Saturday.

The schedule is subject to change to meet mission requirements.

Health cinema

PORT ANGELES — Free Alternative Health Cinema returns at the Natural Healing Clinic, 162 S. Barr Road, at 6 p.m. today.

“Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret” is a 90-minute documentary that “follows a filmmaker as he uncovers the most destructive industry facing the planet today and investigates why the world’s leading environmental organizations are too afraid to talk about it,” according to a news release.

Attendees are encouraged to arrive 15 minutes early.

Ancestry Club

CLALLAM BAY — The Clallam Bay Library Ancestry Club will meet at the library, 16990 state Highway 112, at 1 p.m. today.

The topic is “Crossing the Bering Strait Land Bridge 70,000-11,000 Years Ago,” on the journey from the Asian continent to the Americas.

The club welcomes all who wish to learn about this experience.

Mac users group

SEQUIM — The Strait Mac Users Group will meet at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 525 N. Fifth Ave., at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Rick Johnston will give a presentation on iMovie and outline the basics of Apple’s newest version of it.

IMovie is a way to take pictures and video from a phone, tablet or camera and shape them into movie presentations.

Refreshments will be served.

Senior nutrition

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles Senior Nutrition Site dinners will be served at 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday at the Port Angeles Senior and Community Center, 328 E. Seventh St.

A suggested donation is $5 for those who are 60 or older.

People younger than 60 can attend for $8.

Reservations should be made 24 hours in advance to 360-457-8921.

Menus are subject to change.

■ Tuesday: Spinach salad, braised beef tips, mashed potatoes, green beans and peaches-n-cream.

■ Wednesday: Cole slaw, pulled pork sandwich, applesauce and berry cobbler.

■ Thursday: Tomato juice, spring greens, clam chowder, chicken strips, orange slices and rice pudding.

■ Friday: Carrot salad, chicken a la king over biscuit, baked tomato and pears.

Blueberries topic of talk this Saturday

SEQUIM — The WSU Clallam County Master Gardeners will present “All About Growing Blueberries” at the Woodcock Demonstration Garden, 2711 Woodcock Road, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday.

Veteran Master Gardener Jeanette Stehr-Green will talk about the general types of blueberries and recommended varieties for the Pacific Northwest.

She will describe the ideal planting site for blueberries, including soil acidity and how to plant them, plus outline general care for blueberries and demonstrate a simple step-by-step approach to pruning them for productivity.

These free classes are sponsored by WSU Clallam County Master Gardeners every other Saturday during the growing season.

Stehr-Green has grown blueberries in her home garden for more than a decade and has learned about growing them through trial and error and in-depth research.

Kid’s Day slated

CHIMACUM — The Chimacum Market, 9122 Rhody Drive, will have a Kid’s Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 9.

This free event features music by Harmonica Pocket and games with leaders from the YMCA.

Kids of all ages can play on tractors from Red Dog Farm, paint a bowl with Millbrook Clayworks and get a free organic carrot from a local farm.

Smoothie workshop set this month

SEQUIM — Sequim Chiropractic Clinic, a chiropractic office, will host a free smoothie-making workshop, “Be Smooth,” at the Boys & Girls Club, 400 W. Fir St., at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 10.

Guests will learn the benefits of fruits and vegetables, plus the health advantages each has.

Specific foods can lower the risk of stroke, stabilize blood sugar, support healthy skin and vision, lower cholesterol, decrease the chance for heart disease, reduce fever and more, according to a news release.

The second half of this workshop will be a smoothie-making demonstration during which guests will have the chance to taste the smoothies and learn how to incorporate a variety of fresh foods in their diet.

They also will receive a “Special Report,” which includes all the information discussed in the workshop, as well as all the smoothie recipes to take home and learn for themselves.

The workshop is hosted by Dr. Robert D. Bean, a chiropractor who has been serving the Sequim and Port Angeles areas for the past 16 years.

Food, craft vendors

PORT ANGELES — Food and craft vendors are being sought for the Arts and Draughts “Fermentation Celebration,” a beer and wine festival to be held Sept. 26-27 on Laurel Street in downtown Port Angeles.

Arts and Draughts is a new Port Angeles Downtown Association event celebrating local culture.

It will offer a taste of locally produced beers, wines and ciders from the Olympic Peninsula while honoring local artists and their works with exhibits, gallery tours and “art-in-the-making” demonstrations.

The event will include a variety of fine and performing arts, art classes and a street fair of hand-crafted merchandise and food vendors.

Family-friendly events and activities for kids of all ages will take place in the vicinity of Railroad Avenue.

This event will coincide with the Big Hurt, a four-stage multi-sport relay race scheduled Saturday, Sept. 26.

The vendor fee is $75 for a 10-foot-by-10-foot space.

The deadline for applying is Aug. 27.

Hot Thunder Nite

FORKS — A new event called Hot Thunder Nite will cruise into downtown Forks on Saturday, Aug. 29.

Main Street will be closed from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., and vendors, food, live music, beer garden and vehicles of all kinds will fill the street.

The event is sponsored by West End Thunder, the Forks Chamber of Commerce and the city.

Any type of vehicle is welcome.

Designated areas will be set aside for cars, trucks, big rigs and motorcycles.

There will be a 3 p.m. cruise for vehicles before the event gets underway.

Registration for vehicles is $10 for cars, trucks and big rigs. Motorcycle registration is $5.

There will be an award for People’s Choice for best vehicle.

To qualify for the president’s list, a student must be enrolled for at least 12 quarter hours of credit in courses numbered 100 or above, receive no incompletes and earn a college grade-point average for the quarter of not less than 3.90.

Honor roll requirements are the same, except for a GPA of no less than 3.60.
